Flourless Cookies

I love cookies! There has never been a cookie I wouldn’t eat, but homemade are my favorite.  I love to bake, but I don’t always love all the steps of making typical cookies…because sometimes I just want a cookie.  Try out these delicious and easy flourless cookies!!  As you can see, there are many variations you can do with the base ingredients!

PB CookieAlmond Cookie

1/2 Cup All Natural Nut Butter (Left is Peanut Butter, Right is Almond Butter)

1 1/2 Tbsp Coconut Sugar

1/2 – 1 Tbsp Raw Honey (I added it for moisture, you can substitute more coconut sugar if you wish)

1 Egg

1/4 tsp Baking Powder

1 Tbsp (plus a little extra for on top) Dark Chocolate Chips (I use Lily’s Chocolate Chip sweetened with Stevia)

1/2 tsp Vanilla (OPTIONAL)

Combine all ingredients in a bowl (except chocolate chips) and mix until well combined. Stir in chocolate chips.  Drop on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper (approximately tablespoon sized). These cookies don’t spread like normal cookies, so flatten a little and put more chocolate chips on top if desired.  Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 7-8 minutes. Let cool and devour!  I got 9 cookies out of this.

Tally’s Tips:
*Don’t overcook or the cookies will be dry. Boo!!!

*Get creative! Try another nut butter (although peanut peanuts are not technically a nut). Cashew, yes please!

*Try adding additional ingredients. I used crunchy peanut butter and it was awesome…for some reason, it does make them a little more dry.

Your Dreams as Stupid

Your dreams are stupid.

Maybe nobody has come out and told you that, but sometimes that’s how it feels.  Maybe that’s what they are implying.

“Do you know how much work that will take?”

“That’s impossible.”

“You don’t understand how hard it is to make it.”

Everybody feels it’s their job to tell you that you’re stupid.  What’s stupid, is to not move toward your dreams. To listen to people tell you that you can’t do it because they are afraid to follow their dreams.   Don’t let others stop you from trying great things. From trying to reach your dreams. From reaching your goals.

People don’t reach their dreams by sitting on the couch thinking about reaching their goals. It comes from action. It comes from daily steps toward your goals. It comes from overcoming your fears and the fears that people are portraying onto you.

You need to stop believing that you can’t. The closer you step to your big goals, you will be able to see that perhaps you can reach your goals.  Perhaps it’s possible to fulfill all your dreams and feel the joy of actually starting and accomplishing something that matters.  It’s only possible with motion.

Your dreams are not stupid. No matter how small you start,  start.

Just Believe!

‘Clean Eating’, What is it?

Clean eating is not a diet, it is a simple approach to a healthy lifestyle.  It is centered around eating mainly whole foods that are unprocessed and in their natural form. (meaning no added chemicals or ‘man-made’ ingredients).  It’s a diet high in healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and lots of water.  I see it as a lifestyle, not a diet, that provides your body with healthy, natural, and nutrient rich foods.

What are the Benefits?

A lot of people go for the clean eating lifestyle for the weight loss benefits.  Sure, you can (and probably will) lose weight eating clean. In fact, that contributed to me losing about 50 pounds. Eating clean will also make you FEEL better. It can balance your energy levels because your body is absorbing more nutrients than it is with processed foods. Nutritious foods also help prevent disease by building a stronger immune system.  By building a stronger immune system, your body will be able to naturally fight off illness more easily and you will be able to recover more quickly.  Who wouldn’t want that?!

What should I eat?

You should be eating as many natural, whole foods as possible.  Things like: all fresh fruits & vegetables, lean meats (preferably organic free range chicken, grass-fed beef, wild caught fish), nuts, natural nut butters, greek yogurt, 100% whole wheat / grains (breads, pasta, torillas, brown rice, quinoa), rolled or steel cut oats, hummus, eggs (preferably cage free), almond milk, coconut milk, etc…

What should I try to eliminate?

Sugary drinks like soda & juice, fast food, fried foods, anything ‘enriched’ (White flour, rice, breads, and pastas), preservatives, products labeled ‘reduced fat’ or ‘low fat’, chips, candy, & cereal.  Choose fresh fruits and veggies over canned, if possible.

The 80/20 Rule

While all this sounds great, let’s be honest…it seems impossible to stick to this kind of lifestyle indefinitely. There are parties, events, anniversaries, etc. that you will want to participate in.  That is why I suggest the 80/20 rule.  80% of the time, I eat healthy, whole, minimally processed foods. The other 20% of the time I allow myself to indulge in some ice cream, pizza, store bought cookie, etc.  You don’t want to restrict yourself so much that you just want to give up on a healthy lifestyle.  Indulge a little at a party, while you’re out with friends, or while you’re having a family night.  The key is moderation. You don’t need to eat the WHOLE cake, but a slice will do. 🙂  Good Luck!

The Road to Perfection

One of the beautiful, dedicated, and inspiring challengers in my recent challenge group inspired this post.  While this isn’t directly about her or her question, she made me think a little more about what I have recently learned.

A little back story… I wasn’t necessarily popular in school, but I did have good self-esteem.  Not boastful, but nobody could make me feel bad about myself and I was strong with what I felt right. After I got married and had my children, my self-esteem was the lowest it had ever been.  In my mind I was the worst mother in the world, the worst wife, a lousy cook, a failure at keeping my house clean, way too fat, ugly, stupid… you name it, I thought it.  Ending my life was never a thought (thankfully), but I dreaded getting out of bed every morning, I dreaded being a failure all over again.  How did this happen?

A few months go by after I had my second child. I’m miserable with my life (everyone in my house was probably miserable too).  I hate how I look, I hate how I feel and I am totally sick of it.  I decide to take a stand and at least start to exercise to lose the weight. There sat Turbo Fire. I had for close to a year and there it sat collecting dust.  Believe me, it wasn’t easy.  My kids wake up early, so that meant I needed to wake up between 4:30 & 5:00AM to get my exercise in.  There were days I really wanted to stay in bed, but knew I had to change. After losing some weight with exercise and the help of Shakeology, I started feeling a little better about myself, but still had some self-esteem issues.  I really believe in the Beachbody products, their values, and their mission.  I wanted to help people lose weight and feel better about themselves.  I decided to become a Beachbody Coach.  I am not a personal trainer, I am not a nutritionist, I am not at my goal weight, and I do not eat healthy 100% of the time.  Now I have another problem… I am not perfect!  How am I going to help someone when I am not perfect myself?

This is where personal development came in.  One of the things that Beachbody highly recommends for coaches is reading and listening to personal development books daily.  This was the biggest turning point in my life.  My biggest take away is that I’m not perfect. In this life, I never will be and nobody else will be either.  Guess what… that’s okay!  I had it planted in my head that I had to be perfect at everything, everyday in order to be a good person, a good mother, a good wife, a good business owner etc.  It’s not easy to live up to the expectation of perfection.  I learned the most happy and successful people in the world work on themselves every day.  They work to be a little better and learn a little more.  They see the good in every situation and try to see the good in all people… including themselves.

Today I am still not the best cook in the world, I have a messy house, eat junk food sometimes, have some day I don’t feel like exercising, still have a couple pounds I could lose, and probably won’t win the #1 Mom award anytime soon, but I continue to work on ME daily.  I try not to dwell on what I deemed as a failure in the past.  We are human, we screw up.  The road to perfection is very depressing and lonely.  Don’t aim for perfection because you most certainly will fail. All we can do is strive every day to be a little better than we were yesterday.

Are you exercising your brain?

Statistics say that 33% of High School graduates and 42% of College graduates will not pick up another book for the rest of their lives.  Those are amazing and sad statistics.  How can you continuously learn and grow if you do not read?  How do you expect to better your life if you do not learn and grow?  There are so many excuses for everything in life… time and money being the biggest excuses I have heard (and used in the past).  Books can open you up to new ideas, better ways of thinking, and vast new worlds to explore and understand.

I have a goal to read something every day.  I wake up early every morning so I can exercise before the kids wake up.  After my physical workout, I get my mental workout in, I read.  I try to get in 10 pages, but really I could be reading 10 to 45 minutes depending on when my kids wake up.  At night, after we put the kids to bed, my husband and I read.  My aim is for at least 30 minutes,  but sometimes I don’t get that much in and sometimes I get more.  We used to turn the television on for back ground noise and surf the web before bed.  Now that we have turned the electronic devices off, I find that I am less lazy at night, get to bed at a more decent hour, and fall asleep a lot faster which in turn helps me wake up more refreshed and ready for the day.

If, at the moment, you are not financially able to buy new books, there are great used books in really good condition available for purchase or you can pick one up at the library for FREE.  (Go get a Library card if you don’t already have one!)  Don’t let your finances be an excuse to not read!

I personally like to read personal development books.  Novels are great and all, but they don’t help to better your life, just your reading skills. Personal developement books have improved my outlook on myself, others, and life.  Choose a skill you would like to develop or know more about and pick up a book.  It could be anything from gaining a positive attitude to learning how to work on cars.  There’s a book written about everything!

Don’t know where to start?  Check out my book recommendations HERE.

I would love to hear YOUR recommendations!  Share your favorite books in the comments below. 🙂

Push-up Form

The push-up is an excellent whole body workout.  Push-ups can be done anywhere and require no equipment… what more could you ask for?  In order to get the most out of every push-up and to prevent injury, make sure to use proper form.  You may not be able to master proper form at first (I’m constantly working on mine), but the more consistant you are, the better and stronger you will get.  Make sure to keep your back flat and that your body is aligned.  Keep yourself safe and push yourself to do a little more everytime.  You may just surprise yourself how strong you become. 🙂

There’s NO ‘magic pill’!

Contrary to what people may believe, It doesn’t take a miracle to lose weight.  However, it does take commitment and drive… there is no ‘magic pill’.

It’s not about going on a strict 1100 calorie diet (please don’t do that).  You don’t have to ban your favorite food forever.  It’s not about killing yourself in the gym for 2 hours a day either.  It’s about exercising on a REGULAR basis, eating healthy, clean foods as much as possible, and yes, OCCASSIONALLY indulging in some of your favorite foods or treats.  The key word being occasionally!  Instead of eating a whole bag of Peanut Butter Cups 5 times a week, try to limit it to a couple pieces once a week.  Instead of eating pizza 2 times a week, try to limit it to once or twice a month.  Plan when you will indulge and use good judgment.  Remember PORTION CONTROL!!  Even if you are eating really healthy, you CAN  gain weight if you are eating too much.  You really don’t need 2 cups of rice and 8 ounces of chicken for dinner.

Honestly, if you want to lose weight it all starts in your head.  There is no secret!!  Be consistent in your workouts and eating habits. Go for a LIFESTYLE change and not the next fad diet that probably is not do-able for very long and may not be that healthy for you.  Stop thinking about it as losing weight and start thinking about becoming healthier… the weight-loss will follow!

Shoe, Shoe, which Shoe to Choose?

I’m going to share a little secret that only my husband knows… Hello, my name is Tally and I am a shoe addict!  I LOVE shoes, but not just any kind of shoe, athletic shoes!  I even have a hard time parting with them… some are 5 years old, but I just can’t throw them out.  If I let myself, I could spend hours looking at and researching exercise shoes.  The only thing going for me is that I am pretty practical, so I don’t buy all the shoes I want.

Workout shoes are something I’m not really cheap on.  Although, if I find a pair of shoes I want and they have an ‘ugly’ color on clearance, I will usually buy the clearance shoe (I have an awesome purple and bright orange pair for this reason).  I don’t skimp because I think shoes are important to protect your feet and make exercise more comfortable, IF you get the right pair.

I wish I remember where I read it, but the article stated that you should replace your athletic shoes every 600 miles.  For example, if you walk 2 miles, 5 days a week, you will reach 600 miles in about a year.  Hmmm, sounds like a great reason to go buy some shoes, but there are so many shoes out there that it can get overwhelming trying to find the ‘perfect’ pair.  Make sure to get the correct type of shoe and don’t use the shoes you exercise in for everyday wear.  Remember, running shoes are designed for forward motion and cross trainers are designed for all direction movements.  If you want to run AND do Zumba or TurboFire, I suggest getting two different shoes (BONUS! More shoes!).  If you just don’t want two pair (and you are just a casual runner), I wear training shoes.  Running shoes just don’t give me the support I need when doing anything other than running.  Just don’t do a marathon or anything in your training shoes, they have specialty running stores where you can get fitted and get help picking out the ‘perfect’ pair.

Now which shoe should you choose?  I can’t really answer that for you.  Everyone is different, so what works for me, may not work for you, but I can tell you I always lean toward Nike.  Their shoes have always fit my feet better than any of the other brands I have tried.  My current pairs are Nike Free Run, Nike Free XT Motion, Nike Shox, & Reebok Realflex (these are a great shoe, but I still prefer my Nike’s).  I have heard that Brooks and Asics are really great running shoes, I just have not tried them… YET.

Remember DON’T take your athletic shoe shopping lightly.  You shoes can make or break your workout, which in turn can effect you reaching your goal.  Take the time to try on many pair in different brands and find the ones that work for you.  If you have a favorite shoe, please comment and let everyone know.  I would love shoe suggestions… I’ll take any reason to go check out more shoes!!  Happy Shopping!
